Area Information
The Guamaso volcano is located at the top of the Valley of
La Orotava, bordering between La Corona Forestal (like the forest crown) and the beginning of the national
park.
The volcano is visible from the Orotava Valley, if if there are no clouds.
The flora of the area are Rosalillos de Cumbre
(Pterocephalus lasiospermus), retamas del Teide (Spartocytisus supranubius), hierba
pajonera (Stellaria media) and some pines (Pinus canariensis).
From this area
we can see the line that separates the Canarian pine forest (the forest crown)
from the high mountain vegetation.
In relation to the fauna we find the mosquitero canario, la bisbita
caminero and the curruca tomillera, and near here (medium more forest) we find
blue finches, blacksmiths, blackbirds and robins. You can also see some hawk.
Geologically, wer find some volcanic boms and diverse volcanic materials.
Description of the path
We started this trail on the TF-21 road that goes from El Portillo to La Esperanza. Just a few meters before passing El Portillo, we find a
small entrance, on the left side, with stone areas where the trail begins and where we can leave
the car.
We can also go the National Park with the Bus: lines 348 (from Puerto de la Cruz)
and 342 (from Adeje), and stay at El Portillo. From this point you can reach
the mountain of Guamaza by a small trail of no more than 14 minutes (so you
don’t need to walk along the road).
La Orotava views
The trail is circular, where we will surround the mountain
and see the views of the Valley of La Orotava (as it was said before, if there is not the sea of clouds).
In the first part we find a Tagoror, being able to make the
tour around the mountain, in one way or in the other one.
The word Tagoror means: where formerly the Guanches used to meet.
The path is well signposted (at many points it is necessary
to go in a single row) and the ground is not abrasive
Already taking the middle of the road (more or less) we
passed by the crater, which forms a small valley in the interior.
