Area Information

During this walk, we are going to walk for diverse zones, being two of them two former royal ways:

-El Camino de Las Aguas: this way goes close to the coast, t was for the one that the inhabitants, of the zone and of the Northwest of the island, had to come to the Valley of La Orotava.

Las Aguas path

-El Camino Real del Mazapé:  it was used in long ago for the neighbors of the mediocrities to go down to the Villa of San Juan de la Rambla. His name, Mazapé, drift of the crag for that trascurre the path, though also it is known as the Way of The Deceased (people used this way to go to the old cemetery placed in the entry of the Villa).

Mazapé path

Between the vegetation of the zone we can find: Vinagreas (Rumex lunaria), Tabaibas Amargas (Euphorbia mellifera), Piteras (American Agave), Cornicales (Periploca laevigata), Bejeques (Aeonium holochrysum), Magarzas (Argyranthemum broussonetii), etc. It is not an abundant vegetation, but bushes, since we are almost a foot of coast. As for the fauna, we find especially Lizards (Lacertilia).

When the walk was done, we saw that the way of the Mazapé (former real way for which we rise) there was rest of fire, and the day of San Juan, tthere are different areas of fires, small bonfires, which cross the way.

Description of the Path

The drop of the Path

We initiate the path in the Municipality of San Juan de La Rambla, since it was mentioned in the first part, but to be mas concrete, beginning in the city of San Juan

To come to the zone, we can go by car and  parked it in the parkings of the road or take the public transport. Line 363 (Port of the Cruz-Buenavista) or 106 well or 107 (from Puerto de la Cruz up to Icod and Buenavista). Without forgetting the option of the taxi.

San Juan

The tour is a circular path, so we come to the same point, but not for the same way. This one is the best way of coming to the same point, without seeing the same thing. There is no signposting (only in the zone that we take  Barranco Ruiz "Ravine Ruiz"), but the path is in the own soil and then on having taken the section of road, we do not leave it.

We begin the path near the Parish of San Juan Bautista. To few meters of the same one, to left hand there are a few stairs that connect with the road - bridge that it crosses rightly over the TF-5. On having crossed it we have a workshop and to left hand finishing the bridge we find a small way that connects with the real way, which raises the hillside.

The small bridge in the TF-5 and the paht

This part is in continuous ascension, in the shape of zigzag and the original stone pavement  is preserved. On having stopped rising, we come to a dirt track, where we can see different gardens, and on having finished it we come rightly to a rural hotel (San Juan Rural Hotel). It is necessary to say that much begins in this continuous weary ascension, but it is worth it  for the effort and the sights that we are discovering along the same one.

We continue rising for this way of cement, up to the street and it takes to left hand. From now and until Ruiz we are going to go for way asphalted surface. On having come to the above mentioned road, it is a zone of many gardens. In this section we do not leave this principal road and are going to come to the viewing-point of the Mazapé (closed when the path was done) and which can be seen from the road TF-5 in direction Icod de los Vinos), that is before Ruiz.

The paht and the square in Barranco Ruiz

The path of Ravine Ruiz we find it to left hand, come to a few houses and there we find a square and a chapel. To right hand of the square we see without difficulty the path of Ravine Ruiz (also there are signs in this point that indicates us the path).

In this occasion, we get down Ravine Ruiz (already in another publication, we speak about this path: http://andandoportenerife.blogspot.com.es/2013/09/sendero-barranco-ruiz.html

Barranco Ruiz

Once we finish Ravine Ruiz, cross the TF-5 (many precaution) and go towards the city of La Rambla. We continue for the road, without leaving her, and on having come to the houses, which are found in the last part of this road we take to right hand, rightly there is a square and the Hermitage of El Rosario. In this point we are bordering on the coast, former walk (not very well preserved), that goes towards the city of Las Aguas.

Along this real way, we can see some Canary houses, different already remodelled houses but not changing his constitution. At all time we are stuck to the coast. On having finished the way, we come to Las Aguas.

In La Rambla

Once we are in Las Aguas, take the road for the sidewalk, and go again towards San Juan, the same beggining point.

During hot days it is necessary to take many precautions, since there is no vegetation (so not shade) and many of the sections is across asphalt. Even when it is cloudy, we can see the panoramic ones of all the north of the island, from Isla Baja to El Sauzal, which offers us this path, since we are at high altitude, without forgetting the panoramic ones that we have of the municipality of San Juan de la Rambla.
