Las primeras referencias escritas datan de finales del siglo XVIII, a través de los escritos de los visitantes y mediante disposiciones oficiales que buscaban el orden social durante su celebración.
En 1925 se crea el primer Programa del #Carnaval de #Tenerife, de la mano del Ayuntamiento de #SantaCruz.
Desde ese momento, será el encargado de organizar el evento y comienzan a formarse murgas, comparsas, rondallas y diferentes agrupaciones.
Durante la dictadura estuvieron prohibidos (se celebraban de manera privada), pero partir de 1961 se acepta la celebración de manera oficial bajo el nombre de Fiestas de Invierno.
Desde 1962 se realiza un cartel del Carnaval para cada edición.
En 1967 recibe la distinción de Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.
Con la llegada de la democracia recuperan su nombre de Carnaval y ya en 1980 se eleva este reconocimiento a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional.
En 1987 acudió al Carnaval la célebre cantante cubana Celia Cruz junto a la orquesta Billo’s Caracas Boys, a la que asistieron 250.000 personas. Fue registrada en el Libro Guinness de los récords como la mayor congregación de personas en una plaza al aire libre para asistir a un concierto, marca que se mantiene en la actualidad. En el 2019 al concierto de Juan Luis Guerra habían unas 400.000 personas, pero no había un jurado oficial para testificarlo.

The first written references date back to the end of the 18th century, through the writings of visitors and through official provisions that sought social order during its celebration.
From that moment, the City Council will be in charge of organizing the event and begin to form murgas, comparsas, rondallas and different groups.
During the dictatorship they were prohibited (they were celebrated rather privately), but from 1961 the official celebration is accepted under the name of Winter Festivities.
In 1967 it received the distinction of National Tourist Interest Festival.
Since 1962, a Carnival poster has been made for each edition.
With the arrival of democracy, it was recovered the name of Carnival and already in 1980 this recognition rose to Festival of International Tourist Interest.
In 1987, the famous Cuban singer Celia Cruz attended the Carnival with the Billo's Caracas Boys orchestra, which was attended by 250,000 people. It was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gathering of people in an open-air plaza to attend a concert, a mark that remains today. In 2019 there were around 400,000 people at the Juan Luis Guerra concert, but there was no official jury to testify it.
