Tenerife

Tenerife nombre

With this publication, we finish the review of the name of our islands. As we said, the order was according to how they were conquered, so we ended up with #Tenerife, the last #CanaryIsland to be conquered (forgive the redundancy).
Tenerife has been known by different names throughout history:
-Ninguaria: appears named in the text (Natural History to the Fortunate Islands) of Pliny the Elder. The name is of the perpetual snow or cloud cover.
- Nivaria: Latin expression that translates the snow motif of the Plinian text, although it is believed that in an erroneous way. This name has remained until today in the denomination of the episcopal diocese of this province: Nivariense Diocese. That of the province of Las Palmas is the Canarienses Diocese.
-Isla del Infierno: it appears on maps and charts throughout the fourteenth century. Either because of the eruptions on the island or because it was Teide itself that was erupting.
- Tenerife: this is the name that has prevailed the most and has been the most used by historians. Name of Guanche origin and it would be the Benahoritas who would name the island Tene or Tener (mountain) + ife (white). In many places Tene appears, and that the r was added later by the Castilians for a better pronunciation; but in another it comes directly to have as the word given by the Benahorites.
What, if it is clear, is that the island owes its name to Teide, since many of the meanings show the volcano and the snow that it had.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria nombre

Gran Canaria name

(En)

The first name we find is that of Canaria written by Plinio El Viejo (Pliny the Elder), who made a trip to the islands by order of Juba II. In the commentary "The closest to this one [from Ninguaria] is called Canaria because of the number of dogs of enormous size, of which two were brought to Juba."
Why Canary? the most deeply rooted thesis is that the word comes from the name of the Canarian Atlas tribe (the "Canarii" of the Roman texts, as we have previously discussed in another publication).
Then, during the time of the conquest, the adjective of Gran appears in the book of Le Canarien (although it is not that they put the adjective of great, but that's already in previous maps it was referred to as Canaria La Grande).
Why Great? This adjective may come because they well believed that it was the largest island in the archipelago; either because of the tenacious resistance of the ancient settlers to being conquered; for its central position in the archipelago next to #Tenerife...
#GranCanaria was the most populated island of all and the one with the best social organization before the conquest (it is the only one of all that had constructions made at the arrival of the conquerors). For this explanation, it is believed that they gave it the qualification of Gran to differentiate it from the rest of the #CanaryIslands.
The names of Canaria and Gran Canaria were used interchangeably to refer to the island. The denomination Canaria was more popular, and that of Gran Canaria more official, especially from the 20th century.
Tamarán? It is believed that this is the name by which the aborigines called the island ("Tameran, which means the country of the brave") above all, this term has been extended since the 19th century.

The name of La Palma must have been given by Mallorcan sailors before the conquest, since it was pre-existing in the texts of Le Canarien.
However, as the chroniclers observed during the conquest of Le Canarien, it is not the palms (Phoenix canariensis) that are the most representative of its flora; nor is this the island of #theCanaries that has the most palms (contrary to what his name might suggest, which is why the apparent clarity of his botanical etymology has been questioned)
Three hypotheses have been considered to explain the toponym:
-The first is totally legendary, and says that some Spaniards in the time of King Abis or Abides, fleeing from a frightful and prolonged drought, found the island of La Palma refuge.
- The second, that the name of La Palma received it from the Mallorcan sailors of the fourteenth century, in recognition of the capital of the island from which they came.
- The third hypothesis is that its name comes from the island of Planaria from the story that Pliny the Elder made of the islands of Canaria in the 1st century

There are many theories about the name of La Gomera throughout history, so let’s put them separately:

-The name is biblical: it comes from the Biblical Gomer, grandson of Noah.

-The name comes from a certain Gomer, son of the mythical Crano and Crana, kings of Italy.

-The name comes from an island king Gomauro or Gomeiro, and that was called because of the much "gum" produced by its seedlings (trees that are part of the laurisilva forest).

-Some Berber parallels are also cited: such as aragomero, aregoma, gomeiroga, agmer e igemran, meaning 'prairie' or 'islet'.

-The name comes from a rock: from the same name existing on the north coast of Morocco (opposite the Spanish coasts).

-The name comes from the North African tribe of the Ghomara:  it reminds that of the Berber tribe of the Gumara, which survives in a small territory of Spanish Morocco.

-Finally that the name comes from Gmara: old Berber tribe in the Western Rif, Castilian in Gomera or Gomara.

It is not known what the origin of the name is, but already in the maps from 1300 onwards dominated the island as Gommaria, Gommera, Gumera, Jumera, Gumelo, Gomera, Gumera, and Guomera.

The island of El Hierro is the most southwestern of the #canary archipelago and as the westernmost land in Europe it served to point out in maps and sea charts the "Prime meridian" until that measure was moved to Greenwich (in 1884).
The word could come from the native language (Hero) but, during the conquest, it was transformed by similarity with the Spanish word.
The current name of the island appears for the first time in the maps and Cartulans of the middle of the fourteenth century. It appeared as Fero (interpreted as erroneous name of Ferro). During this time they sailed the islands to catch the natives and sell them.
The first inscription in which it appears with the Latin étimo of "ferrum" is in Le Canarien in 1402 (chronicle and campaign diary of the expedition to conquer the islands by Jean de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle), there with three French variant forms: Fer, Fair and Ferre.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura nombre

Fuerteventura name

(En)
Before the conquest, and the toponym that is collected in the book Le Canarien, is that of Erbania or Herbania:
-It could mean wall. In the Berber language Erbania means wall, a wall that was built by the aborigines on the isthmus that divided the island into two parts, Maxorata to the north and Jandía to the south.
-Erbania could also mean 'rich in goats', from the Berber urban 'goat', so the names of Erbania and Capraria (name of the Juba expeditionaries), come to mean the same thing, goats.
-The island was known by the Greeks, Romans and Phoenicians, who called it: Planaria due to the absence of very high areas; and Capraria (already mentioned above).
In 1402 the conquest of the island began when Jean de Bethencourt docked on the coast of Fuerteventura. During that year, the island of Majorera appears for the first time on a map, placing it under the name of Forte Ventura.
Although the meaning of Forte is quite clearly (strong), there are doubts about what Ventura can mean (either adventure, or winds).
