Tourism in the #CanaryIslands is born when many patients belonging to wealthy family members travel to the islands, which were "sold" by national doctors and internationals for having a mild climate all year round, clean air, which was ideal for treating respiratory and skin diseases.

Among these diseases were tuberculosis, pneumonia and bronchitis. For this reason, several sanatoriums are built on the island to accommodate these visitors.

One of them was built in Las Cañadas, where today there is some private property known as El Sanatorio. There is not this original building, but some huts built between the 30s and 40s of the last century in the same place.

In any case, the idea of housing patients in these areas due to the sudden drop in temperatures at night is rejected in part and the #Puertodelacruz is chosen as the ideal place for this, but we will talk later.

With medical advances to cure these diseases, and the fact that Las Cañadas has been declared a National Park, many unsustainable actions in the area have been halted.

Also, it is said that the buildings we see are the house of the doctor and services, being paralyzed the work without being built the rooms of the sick.

Edades Islas Canarias / Canary Islands age

This time we will bring the ages of the Canary Islands.

Even if they look young and are so well preserved, they are already their age and that is why we must take better care of them. We have enjoyed them and future generations also have the right to enjoy them as we do.

The oldest islands are the oriental ones, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which emerged 16-22 million years ago.

It is followed by the central islands, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Gomera, with ages ranging from 8.5 to 14.5 million years.

Hierba Pajonera

 Hierba Pajonera

Today we are going to talk about one of the phenomena, with many others, that occur on our islands. In this case in concentration we will talk about the hat of the Teide, lenticular altocumulus is its technical slang.

Every time someone on the island sees such a phenomenon, it is known that the time will change, that it will rain (or so it was fulfilled, because the time is already so crazy that one doesn´t know).

The formation of that cloud at the peak of Mount Teide reveals the presence of moisture and wind at those levels, and that may be an indication that unstable weather is approaching.

Depending on the shape of the hat and its persistence, the front will be more or less active and will bring more rain or more wind.

Some sayings are (well, more or less the sayings are): "When the Teide wears a hat, rains and showers come"; "When the Teide wears a hat, there will be rain and showers"; "When the Teide wears a hat, there will be a downpour"; "When the Teide touches, pick up the clothes"; "When the Teide has touched, goatherd, save your clothes".

Caldera

Names of Garajonay, Teide and Taburiente.
(En)

In the previous publications we talked about the 4 National Parks of the #CanaryIslands, but we forgot to mention in 3 of them the meaning of their names (it was only mentioned in Timanfaya), so let’s get to it.

Why is it named Garajonay?

According to legend, a Prince Jonay (from Tenerife) and a Princess Gara (from La Gomera) decide to commit suicide in the face of opposition from their families. Since then the area, well the mountain, is called Garajonay, in memory of the two lovers.

Although the names of Gara and Jonay could come from the toponym Garajonay whose meaning in the Berber native language of La Gomera is 'the higher rock'.

Why is it named Teide?

As in the previous case, the name comes from a legend.

The Guanches called the Teide "Echeyde", which meant the abode of Guayota, the Evil One. Guayota kidnapped the sun god, Magec, and took him with him into the Teide. The Guanches asked Achaman for help, who defeated him, saving Magec and tamping Echeyde’s mouth (called Sugar Loaf, the last cone to crown Teide).

"Glen is a secluded and narrow valley; a dale; a depression between hills".

Las Cañadas has been a fundamental resource for survival at certain times of the year. In summer there was a concentration of cattle and shepherds from all over the island, before it was declared a National Park.

Why is it named Taburiente?

Relatively more modern eruptions occurred in the Caldera shed semifluid materials that were deposited in the bottom of the same one, producing that species of plain that receives the name of Taburiente.

On the other hand, the word Taburiente, of Berber origin from La Palma, refers to both 'llano (flat)' and 'hondonada (hollow)'.

The two meanings, although apparently contradictory, make sense, since as explained above, the word refers to the plain within the Caldera; and at the same time it can be considered for the whole of the caldera which is a formidable hollow.
