Momias/ Mummies

A mummy is a corpse (human being or animal) that has been kept in good condition during long time after the death for embalming or for natural circumstances (there are places that for its characteristics of dampness, isolation, etc. make possible that the body does not degenerate). Though to refer to mummies, we use improve the meaning of embalming.

The civilization most known by the mummification has been the Egyptian, though it is not the only (unique) one and we can say that we are one of the few places in the world close to Mexico, Peru, Chile and China (it is possible that some other one forgets us) where we can find mummies.

Every civilization had its own procedures to embalm (to mummify). In case of The Original inhabitants of the Canary Isles (Guanches) (in #Tenerife, since in other islands they have not found mummies, there can that some in #GranCanaria), the used of technology was very similar to that of the former Egyptians, but without so much utensils.

They washed the body with bark of pine, the body was drying it to the Sun and was smearing it with lard of sheep. This was repeating itself all the times that it was needing. When the corpse already was light (probe of that it remained prepared well) it was wrapped in skins of goats.

The mummification was carried out by some persons and was not anything extended in the whole population, since it was reserved for the rich classes. After the conquest, the practise were stopped, and these mummies are studied to know more about the ancient population.

We can find them in El Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, in Santa Cruz (photo extracted there). Nevertheless several museums of the world lean Guanches mummies.

Argollas Canarias / Canary Earrings

We are going to speak about the Canary rings, a complement (the ring) that has been in use from always and in this case we are going to mention the design that one finds in our islands.

After being searching it has not found anything that says because of this design or of the birth, etc. Though already in 1885 there was a reference to this complement (in blogs and articles they mention the book of Victor Grau-Bassas " Uses and Customs of the Rural Population of Gran Canaria ")

The rings are made of different materials as gold and silver, though also in other noble materials. The first one, made in gold, were limited to women of a certain age, being rare(strange) to find them in younger women, but with the arrival of the new times, modes, designers ... we can find a great variety of forms (smooth, with drawing, average rings, etc.) and sizes, for all the ages.

The Canary rings, rings of them "S" or of half moon, there are characterized for a "S" recumbent that it possesses in the middle.

Laurisilva

The Laurisilva is a type of subtropical forest, which is characterized by its high dampness and rainfalls due to the fact that in the same one the sea of clouds settles (attracted by the trade winds) and catches the water of these clouds. The temperature in the same one also is constant all the year round.

This type of forest was spreading (million years ago) in the north of Africa and Europa's south (thing that the opposing fossils check), but due to the fragility of this forest and the climate changes suffered along the history (glaciations and arid periods), has disappeared only being in #TheCanaryIslands, Madeira and The Azores.

The Laurisilva spreads between the 300 and 1000 meters on the sea level. It is a green mass of different species (being able to be up to 18 species different from trees). Between these species we find the Laurel (Laurels Novacanariensis), Viñatigo (Pesera Indica), Barbusano (Apollonias Barbujana), Acebiño (Ilex Canariensis), Mocán (Visnea Mocanera), Palo Blanco (Notolaea Excelsa), etc.

Among the fauna that lives there the majority of them are invertebrate species as the worms. Between the vertebrates we find the Paloma Rabiche (Columba Junoniae), La Paloma Turqué (Columba Bolli), both are types of doves.

La Cueva del Viento (The Cave of the wind) in #IcoddelosVinos is the major volcanic pipe of the European Union, and one of the biggest of the world (if we are not bad, it is the fifth one). It crosses in its entirety the municipality, from summit to coast.

Its formation owes to the washes of lava of the eruption of Pico Viejo (Old Beak) 27.000 years ago of antiquity, volcano placed next to #Teide

The pipe measures 18 Km that one divides in three levels. Along the same one we find formations like simas (pot) and terraces. Also along the pipe we find several cavities that connect between if, and there are known 7 mouths of access to the pipe.

In the same one they live some species (in the main invertebrates), and they have found fossils of already extinguished animals, which belonged to the prehistoric epoch #canaria. In the different income they have found archaeological remains of the original inhabitants of the Canary Isles (these were living in the caves).

The Cave was known already 2000 years ago, as it was said previously, it was lived by the original inhabitants of the Canary Isles. In the year 1776 there iwas the first record of this cave and in 1891 a small excursion is realized of scanty 400m. It is the year 1968 when speleologists of the islands visit it and it was exploring. From inventories are at the time numerous to determine the species, the tour, etc.

Nowadays a company is the manager of exploiting it, doing routes guided in different languages as there are different informative panels. (Also it is necessary to say that thanks to this company, the pipe is reported).

Pino/ Canary Pine

The Canary Pine (Pinus Canariensis) is the vegetable more abundant of #TheCanaryIsland. It is important in the same ones due to the paper that it recovers, since it condenses the water of the clouds, retains the soil, produces oxygen, cleans the air and it is used as food.

The pine possesses a principal root and secondary several that look for the water and the nutrients, this fact does that this species grows in almost any type of soil, as the volcanic one. During the youth, it has a rapid growth and reaches 10 meters of height, in the adult age it can reach 30 meters in height. When the hundred of years happens, the glass does not grow, as what it adopts different forms, but the branches yes.

The wood of the pine is in two places at the same time in an exterior part that is between white and yellow and the interior the bark, the TEA, which is incorruptible and it is between resinous and sickly-sweet. The wood is turning gross with the years and with the oldness carte. Two more heights, the TEA possess more volume. This thickness can reach 8 cm, and this one is the motive for the pine is resistant to the fires, re-sprouting new leaves for a little time. Thanks to this one resistance this species is removed to repopulate forests in Italy, Morocco, Israel, United States, etc. The leaves manage to measure, more or less, 30 cm, and another one of the characteristics of this one the only species, it is that they remain joined of 3 in 3 phases.

Since already it was named, the TEA is a resistant wood and it was used for years for the construction ( this wood not only was used by the inhabitants of the islands, but also It was exported. It came up to such a point of the deforestation, which was necessary to repopulate them and nowadays this one is a protected species)

The pine possesses so much masculine as feminine flowers. The masculine chip great quantity of pollen, whereas the feminine ones produce the pineapples, which can measure between 12 and 18 cm of length and from 8 to 10 of the diameter.

Drago / Dragon Tree

El Drago (Dracaena Draco) is a tree which is typical of #TheCanaryIsland and above all, it is one of the symbols of Tenerife. El drago has been a symbol for Los Guanches (ancient inhabitants), due to the fact that it had magical properties. This kind of tree was searched by many people owning the fact that they used its blood as a medicine.

This species is endemic in Madeira, #TheCanaryIsland and Cabo Verde, although it has been found some population of this type of tree in Morocco. This tree is a slow growth, its stalk is plain, but it has furrows with the years. This is the unique tree that has red sap, not white as the other trees. To estimate the age, we have to see the number of lines, because it has not rung. It phases between 50 and 60cm of length and it can be 12 m of height.

Along the history we can find some narrations about its description, one of them was made by Alexander Von Humbolt in his unique visit to the island. In this tale, he described the biggest dragon on the island which was in La Orotava, however it was destroyed during a storm in 1987. Although, nowadays we have the major example of this species, El Drago Milenario of #IcoddeLosVinos, symbol of that municipality. The exact age is unknown, but it is estimated that it is between 800 and 1000 years old.

Along of our insular geography we can find examples of this endemic specie (which is protected after times of destruction). It was declared as a symbol of the island in 1991. — en Icod de los Vinos.

Alto de Guamaso Path

Municiality: La Orotava
Aproximate duration: 1:30H
Maximun height: 2076m
Minimun height: 2082m
Distance: 2,54km

Area Information

The Guamaso volcano is located at the top of the Valley of La Orotava, bordering between La Corona Forestal (like the forest crown) and the beginning of  the national park.

The volcano is  visible from the Orotava Valley, if if there are no clouds.

The flora of the area are Rosalillos de Cumbre (Pterocephalus lasiospermus), retamas del Teide (Spartocytisus supranubius), hierba pajonera (Stellaria media) and some pines (Pinus canariensis).

From this area we can see the line that separates the Canarian pine forest (the forest crown) from the high mountain vegetation.

Path

In relation to the fauna we find the mosquitero canario, la bisbita caminero and the curruca tomillera, and near here (medium more forest) we find blue finches, blacksmiths, blackbirds and robins. You can also see some hawk.

Geologically, wer find some volcanic boms and diverse volcanic materials.

Description of the path

The drop of the path

We started this trail on the TF-21 road that goes from El Portillo to La Esperanza. Just a few meters before passing El Portillo, we find a small entrance, on the left side, with stone areas where the trail begins and where we can leave the car.

We can also go the National Park with the Bus: lines 348 (from Puerto de la Cruz) and 342 (from Adeje), and stay at El Portillo. From this point you can reach the mountain of Guamaza by a small trail of no more than 14 minutes (so you don’t need to walk along the road).

La Orotava views

The trail is circular, where we will surround the mountain and see the views of the Valley of La Orotava (as it was said before, if there is not the sea of clouds).

In the first part we find a Tagoror, being able to make the tour around the mountain, in one way or in the other one.

The word Tagoror means: where formerly the Guanches used to meet.

The path is well signposted (at many points it is necessary to go in a single row) and the ground is not abrasive

Already taking the middle of the road (more or less) we passed by the crater, which forms a small valley in the interior.
